God has continued to bless and encourage our church through the mission efforts of our high school students. This summer a team of 41 students, volunteer leaders and pastors will head to the Dominican Republic to share God’s love through work projects, street evangelism, drama and ministry to children.

We will be partnering with Youth With A Mission as we build three homes for poor families, minister in local villages through Vacation Bible School programs and share the Gospel on the streets with drama and testimony!

Over the years we have seen the lives of our high school students transformed through these trips and have seen them go on to participate in missions in college.

Pentecost Offering

This year’s Pentecost offering will be given to Urban Youth Collaborative. They exist to equip young people in San Diego’s urban community to live life to the fullest. They believe this translates to academic achievement, life skills, financial literacy, job readiness, healthy relationships, servant-leadership development, and spiritual well-being.

Each year the RBCPC Concert Series presents a variety of programs showcasing the diversity of the performing arts. Another goal of this ministry is to support the development of the many talented young adults in our midst through the offering of scholarships. These scholarships may be awarded to musicians from RBCPC who plan to major in music with an emphasis in vocal or instrumental performance, musical theater, music education or conducting. Having a positive attitude is huge.  While we may not be able to control the surrounding circumstances, we can always choose our own attitude and response. Happiness is a discipline. We can either let our circumstances control our feelings, or we can focus our hearts on God and seek joy. How do we increase our joy? The best book of the Bible for growing a glad heart and increasing our joy is Philippians. April and May this year we will be marking some of the key passages and teachings of the “Happiest Book of the Bible.”  Bring your Bible as we “Mark Up Philippians” in order to expect more joy.

College Musician Scholarships
Deadline for submission June 3.
Each year the RBCPC Concert Series presents a variety of programs showcasing the diversity of the performing arts. Another goal of this ministry is to support the development of the many talented young adults in our midst through the offering of scholarships. These scholarships may be awarded to musicians from RBCPC who plan to major in music with an emphasis in vocal or instrumental performance, musical theater, music education or conducting. Applications, along with detailed information regarding eligibility, are available in the Welcome Center.

Have Your Giving Plans Changed With The Economy?
The market is down then up then down. Some jobs have changed or are at risk. And interest rates are near 0%.  It can make both pledging and giving to the church challenging. While it is only early March, we are actually eight months into our fiscal year (July-June). Right now, we are about one hundred thousand dollars below where we anticipated we would be. While this does not impact us immediately, if this trend continues, it can have a significant impact on our budget plans beginning in July. It may also tell us something about needs and concerns in our congregation that we should be sensitive too. We have a one question survey we invite you to participate in to help us. Here is our question: Given the economy and other influences, have your plans to give to the church changed?  You can go online and complete our one question survey:

Souper Bowl

We are on a mission to fight hunger and poverty. You can help! More than 15 years ago on a Super Bowl Sunday, a single Presbyterian youth group was inspired by a simple prayer.  They started the Souper Bowl of Caring, a movement that is now an international event. It is also turning our nation’s biggest weekend of football into its largest weekend of giving. At RBCPC, it is an intergenerational event, with our Middle Schoolers, our Boy Scout Troop, and Carpenter’s Fellowship, joining together to “Stir it up!” How can you participate?  Bring soup and $$$ to church on Super Bowl Weekend! Missions

San Francisco Mission Trip Update
This Thanksgiving Holiday 44 students and staff from the RBCPC High School Ministry headed north for mission work in the San Francisco/Oakland area. The students in partnership with Center for Student Missions served the community in many different ways, from preparing pre-packaged meals for the terminally ill, tutoring underprivileged children, spending time with dementia patients, serving food to the homeless, working at the Salvation Army, passing out hygiene packets to those in need on the streets, and many, many more. This was an opportunity to show the love of
Christ and give dignity to anyone experiencing hardship going into this holiday season.

Operation Christmas Child
RBCPC contributed 628 shoe boxes this year, which will be added to over 8 million shoe boxes being sent out worldwide. Our shoe boxes are destined for children in Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Peru and the Philippines. Please pray that each child who receives a shoe box will be touched in a very special, meaningful way and that their lives may become transformed through learning about Jesus and, hopefully, asking Him into their hearts. This may be the only opportunity they ever have to hear the Gospel message.

Bill McCartney, of Promise Keepers and former head football coach at the University of Colorado, wanted to defeat arch rival Nebraska very badly.   Colorado had not beaten Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, for 23 years.  Bill had seen the study related to people thinking about themselves 86% of the time and wanted to get his team members to think about someone other than themselves. So he hatched a plan to hand out 60 game balls, one to each member of the team.  He explained that the final score would be written on these footballs and sent to the person each player dedicated his performance to in the Nebraska game. He asked the team to let the person know that they would be playing with all of their heart for them, and to watch the game. Needless to say, the dedication and heartfelt connection to a special person lifted the Colorado team to victory.  

As always, we are again asking you to pray about and submit your annual pledge to our 2012 annual budget.  Along with your pledge, we ask that you consider whether you might give a little more to increase your personal sense of investment in the game.  Just as those players each dedicated a personal game ball to a loved one, maybe you could dedicate a little more in honor of a loved one.  With your give a little more component, our congregation can do a lot more for the Kingdom of God.

Help Our Preschool Gardeners
Please, “eyes only” while playing on the preschool playground on Sundays. Let’s all watch to see what grows in our new barrels! (For your child’s safety, the barrels should not be moved the wheels are for teachers to move the barrels to sun or protected areas on weekends). Thank you for your help.

Our Preschool was selected as recipient of a $1000 gardening grant from the San Diego Ag. in the Classroom Committee. Several classes are in the process of planting these barrels with vegetables, the goal being to harvest produce in a few months and eat it for snack!  We will also be planting milkweed in barrels at the far end of the playground (the “garden” area) to support the monarch butterfly life cycle.

I love Tony Campolo, his quotes, books and messages.  He tells this story about meeting the needs of others:  He was invited to speak at a meeting of 300 ladies. Before he spoke, the president of the organization read a very moving letter from a missionary with an emergency need for $4,000. The president said, “We need to pray that God will provide the resources to meet the need of this missionary. Brother Campolo, will you please pray for us?”  Tony said, “No.” Startled, she said, “I beg your pardon.”  He said, “No, I won’t pray for that. I believe that God has already provided the resources and that all we need to do is give. Tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to step up to this table and give every bit of cash I have in my pocket. And if all of you will do the same thing, I think God has already provided the resources.”  The president chuckled a bit, “Well, I guess we get the point. He is trying to teach us that we all need to give sacrificially.”  Tony said, “No, that is not what I am trying to teach you. I’m trying to teach you that God has already provided for this missionary. All we need to do is give it. Here, I’m going to put down all of my money I have with me.”  He put down his $15. Reluctantly, the president took out all of her money, about $40, and put it on the table. One by one all of the ladies did the same. They collected over $4,000.  Tony said, “Now, here’s the lesson: God always supplies for our needs, and he supplied for this missionary, too. The only problem was we were keeping it for ourselves.  Now let’s pray and thank God for His provision.”  George Colberg

Stewardship

Stewardship season is fast upon us and it will be Christmas before you know it! When we mention Stewardship, many people think of “fund-raising,” “tithing,” and “sacrificial giving.” That is part of it, but Stewardship means much more. When you come down to it, Stewardship is “the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially: the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.” One of my favorite stories involves a  man named Zacchaeus who gets the chance to make a new beginning - he responds with extraordinary generosity, and becomes an extraordinary Steward displaying careful and generous management of all God had given him.

Zacchaeus shows us the two steps involved in being a good Steward. Being committed to Jesus and realizing that everything we have comes from him, then becoming a generous and faithful giver. The symbolic nature of this story touches on innocence, a small man, childlike unable to see, who humbles himself and climbs a tree, to see Jesus. To see Jesus requires humility and courage, like a child, as we are taught in Mark 10:15:

“Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” We get a glimpse here of this childlike, faithful and accepting behavior that will lead us to the kingdom.

For an adult to climb a tree requires humility. It also takes courage. Being out on a limb is risky, metaphorically and well as in reality. The limb might break with devastating consequences. But more important, a man like Zacchaeus in a tree might provoke laughter and disgrace jeopardizing his ability to enforce his tax collecting, his very livelihood. And in the case of Zacchaeus, it could be worse, after all, not only was he a tax collector, who was despised, he was a Jew was and viewed as a traitor, someone who betrayed his fellow man for personal advantage. To top this off, Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector, and he dealt with the tolls and taxes of a well-traveled route of commerce in Jericho. He came in contact with a large amount of people and dealt with substantial sums of money. We see Jesus using the most unlikely to serve in the kingdom, we too have a chance to serve, if we just move out on the limb, out of our comfort zone.

Stewardship

Tithing
We have all heard the words “tithes and offerings.” My own experience with tithing has been that when I put God first, and budget my expenses after I take out God’s portion, I seem to have enough financial resources available to me to carry me forward.  I can remember many times when tithing should have been difficult, but even though I could rationalize that I couldn’t tithe, I found that I focused on living differently. The result was I had enough and didn’t really “need” God’s portion.  The Bible tells us that we are to be good stewards.  Stewardship means giving to God the first fruits of our labor and not just what we have left over. - Jim Dunny.

High School Mission Trip

Pastor Bruce and Pastor Ray Join High School Mission Team of 42 Going To Peru this Summer!

God has continued to bless and encourage our church through the mission efforts of our high school students…and Pastors Bruce and Ray will be joining them this summer in Peru!  A team of 42 students, volunteer leaders and pastors will head to Ica, Peru June 18 - July 3 to share God’s love through work projects, street evangelism, drama and children’s ministry.

We will be partnering with Youth With A Mission and the El Sahaddai Church of Ica as we build three homes for poor families in an earthquake-devastated area, minister in 8 different villages through vacation Bible school programs and share the Gospel on the streets with drama and testimony!

Over the years we have seen the lives of our high school students transformed through these trips and have seen them go on to participate in missions in college.

Stewardship 

Last fall I experienced a roof leak in my home. There wasn’t a question in my mind that it needed to be repaired, and quickly, with the threat of additional storms moving into the area. I am fortunate to have had the means to make repairs rather than risk additional damage had it been left undone.

If I am quick to take care of my home, shouldn’t I be just as quick to take care of God’s house? If I just set aside a few extra dollars a week, maybe the church would have the funds necessary to make needed repairs to the campus. I am asking you to consider making the same commitment of just “a few dollars more.”  ~Nikki Butera

Pastor Bruce and Pastor Ray Join High School Mission Team of 42 Going To Peru this Summer!

God has continued to bless and encourage our church through the mission efforts of our high school students...and Pastors Bruce and Ray will be joining them this summer in Peru! A team of 42 students, volunteer leaders and pastors will head to Ica, Peru June 18-July3 to share God's love through work projects, street evangelism, drama and children's ministry.

We will be partnering with Youth With A Mission and the El Sahaddai Church of Ica as we build three homes for poor families in an earthquake-devastated area, minister in 8 different villages through vacation Bible school programs and share the Gospel on the streets with drama and testimony!

Over the years we have seen the lives of our high school students transformed through these trips and have seen them go on to participate in missions in college. We have also been blessed to see God bring literally hundreds of children, teens and adults to Himself by using us on these incredible mission trips.

You can help! Please support our students through your prayers and finances. You can make a donation at the "Swing For Our Youth" table on Sundays in the courtyard...and also participate in our golf tournament with a banquet and silent auction in May!

Just a Thought
As I order my usual tall decaf latte, I justify the fact I am here everyday by saying, "It's just $2.65. Besides, a candy bar costs over a $1 now." If I analyze this day by day, it's easy to justify. However, when I add it up, the cost per week is $18.55. When I look at it monthly, the cost is $79.50, and, when I add it up over 365 days, the total amount of $967.25.

As I begin to ponder am I being a good steward of God's money, I question whether this cup of coffee is critical to my survival, or am I squandering away a resource entrusted unto me? I know some of you may say it is vital for your normal existence. However, if I cut back to a cup every other day, I could use the saved $483.62 and pledge it to the church for use in their church budget, the Deacon's fund or ministry outreach, and impact more than just myself. Think about it, a small change and a few cents could make a large difference.
